Cristofano

Cristofano was a Jesuit priest that was born in Lisbon and is 53 years old. He has dedicated his whole life to the evangelization of indigenous people. He is a lonely man, very much attached to what the Bible says and inflexible in his convictions. Cristofano becomes the head of the novices of the Jesuit order and that is where he meets Matias, a young novice, who is only 12 years old and Cristofano develops an attachment to the boy. But the priest ends up giving in to blackmail by a bandeirante, who wants to murder the chieftain of the tribe. In exchange, the bandeirante promises Cristofano the bishopric of Coimbra. But instead of only killing the chieftain, the group engages in a massacre and many get killed, including Matias. Guilt over the children’s death haunts Cristofano and consumes him, turning him into a darkened spirit.
